The Dark side: T.V
It's that time of year. The time of year in which T.V stations have Friday the 13th marathons followed by Nightmare on Elms Street until finally ending on the ever festive Halloween series. Of course, stations fill in the gaps with a peppering of other horror movies. But what's there for those of us who favor a good Netflix binge session?
So, this list is for you. While not all of these dark series can be found on Netflix at this moment, I've decided to share with you a list of dark T.V series that are filled with monsters and a darkness perfect for this time of year!
I've limited this list series that you may have missed, over looked, forgotten about or just never thought of as dark and creepy. These series have all also been viewed, at least in part, by me. So are we ready to get started?
In no particular order, here is our list:
1. Dexter- In all honesty, I haven't had a chance to finish this series yet, largely in part, to how not-so-family friendly this show is. Dexter follows the happenings of Dexter Morgan, an employee at the Police Department by day, a serial killer by night. So what makes him someone to care about? He only kills those who, for one reason or another, the justice system has managed to let roam free. While this series is dark and, at times, disturbing I am drawn to the new take on crime shows and a different view of serial killers.
2. Riverdale- I recently watched all of the episodes that Netflix had to offer from this series and found myself surprised. While Archie and his gang of friends in Riverdale may have been inspired by the adored comics, their life is not all bubble gum and rainbows. This series with a dark twist is an intriguing who done it in a world of romance, secrets, corruption and murder. To be truthful, I was never a huge fan of the comic strips, but this series does not particularly radiate with singularities other then the character's names and some of their physical qualities, however, I did find myself pulled into the story line even when I didn't want to be.
3. Pretty Little Liars- This is another series I haven't yet completed, though is on my To-be watched list. This series is likely darker then you would expect a tale about a group of four friends to be. These teen girls, however, are bound together by the death of one of their own, lies and secrets, two things that only seem to multiply with every season as the secretly investigate who is stalking them now. I will admit that the story line starts to become a little predictable and slightly redundant as the series progresses but I won't deny that it's a series I look forward to experiencing as a whole!
4. Vampire Diaries- I must admit, I am a sucker for vampires which may contribute to my attraction to this series, loosely based off of the book series of the same name. This is the story of a group of ever evolving friends in the supernaturally driven town of Mystic Falls. Oh, and did I mention that this group of friends is primarily a group of people who are not exactly human? Not only will it beg you to pick sides (Team Sefan or Team Damon, both of which are pretty great to look at), this show will make you rethink your own personal alliances and affection for every one of your favorite, and least favorite characters on more than one occasion. It is true that the story lines do have some redundancy about them, allowing you to anticipate twists before they play out, but somehow this series takes hold on you and begs you to watch every moment of the 8 seasons to the very end!
5. The Originals- This is the spin off series featuring the Mikaelsons family who have now taken up residence in New Orleans. This series focuses on the...complicated relationship of the original family as they struggle to adapt to what was once thought of as impossible, embrace new members into their family, ride the emotional roller coaster that has become their relationships while simultaneously battling the demons and enemies they've managed to obtain over the past 1,000 years. In the name of honesty, I will say that I found these characters less appealing then their friends back in Mystic falls, generally speaking. Maybe this has something to do with the Mikaelson's lack of hesitation to shed blood, especially compared to the Mystic Falls crew. With that being said, I am kind of sad to see the series end as it did grow on me in ways I didn't expect it to.
6. Supernatural- I started watching this show when it first came out and I watched the first handful of seasons and I absolutely loved it! This is one T.V show that gives the feel of a horror movie every week. Admittedly, some are better then others but, I mean, they can't all be the best! This is the story of two brothers who had an....unconventional childhood and not find themselves traveling the country in search of answers and revenge for their murdered loved ones, who just happened to be murdered by super natural forces. As they make their way around the country, they track down supernatural leads, fighting the good fight against the evils that most of us don't even know exist. Not only are the leading characters very attractive, I can't help but to love that many of the myths and supernatural cases they take on are based off of real legends and myths! This series the perfect series to experience during Halloween season!
7. Being Human- There are actually two series titled Being Human. One is the U.K version (which began first) and the other is the U.S version. Personally, though the first seasons are similar before the writers went in different directions with the story, I prefer the U.S version so that's the one I'm going to focus on. This is the tale of a vampire, a werewolf and a ghost who all just happen to be roommates with a common goal, to be normal human beings. This quickly proves to be near impossible as the supernatural world can be cruel and often stands in the way. The characters are complex with layers artfully being peeled away throughout each season leaving you not only loving the characters, but sad when the series comes to an end. While I was as in love with the final seasons big story line, I was happy with the way the series ended. While this show is dark in nature, I love watching this group of friends turned family fight back against the supernatural universe brute force and whit.
8. Fringe- Fringe is no longer available on Netflix, but it's still worth a watch if you can find it. While I started watching this series primarily because it stared Joshua Jackson (and who doesn't love him) I was quickly intrigued by the sci-fi turned supernatural twist combined with crime show. The characters are quirky which I adore, making them hard not to love them. I will admit that as you get deep into the series, it does get pretty weird and I did find myself losing some interest by when I experienced the series finale, my mind was blown and I found myself wanting to go back through to watch it all again to find the little pieces I missed the first time.
9. Ghost Hunters- This is another addition to the list that is no longer on Netflix and, after the team changed its members a few time I kind of stopped watching, but in the name of Halloween, I wanted to include one ghost investigation show and Ghost Hunters is my favorite. This is a real life investigation team helping clients decide if their property is really haunted or not. What I like most about this team is that they go in expecting to find reasonable and scientific evidence that the location is NOT plagued by spirits. This means that they don't hear a noise and pronounce it a supernatural happening like so many other teams on T.V tend to do. I don't know about the later team, but the early team dynamic was fun, humorous and knowledgeable while also filled with compassion and good people skills to work with their customers.
So there you have it, nine T.V shows that you may have missed but are just dark and/or creepy enough to be Halloween viewing! Did I make you interested in a show you haven't seen yet? Did I miss one you think should be on the list? Tell me about it in the comments!
