Story Time: Christmas vol. 1

This year, our elf on the shelf, Eli, decided to bring up writing prompts and demanded that we each complete two before he returned again. So, we all chose two prompts and got to writing out stories! This is one of our favorite creations from this fun activity!

Prompt: If I lived in the North pole, I would have a pet...

A North Pole Dream

Once upon a time, there was a little girl. She loved the cold and adored the snow, but there was nothing she liked more then a good bedtime story told by her big brother.

One night, not to long before Christmas the girl snuggled up in bed and waited for her brother to come and share a story with her. Luckily, she didn't have to wait long before he came bouncing in with a huge smile on his face and his hands hidden behind his back.

"What do you have there? she asked eagerly.

"Oh, nothing special. Just a new book I found and thought you might like," he answered, pulling from behind his back a book with a beautifully painted blue sky with snow lakes of diamonds sprinkling down in front of the moon. She was instantly taken by it's beauty and couldn't wait to hear the magical story that was sure to be contained between the covers of this new book!

Happily, her brother sat down on the bed next to were she lay and told her the story of a lost penguin wondering around the North Poe, looking for a home. The little girl was enchanted and instantly taken with the most adorable penguin she had ever seen illustrated!

"So, what would you have for a pet if you lived in the North Pole?" her brother asked after reading the final line of the story. She thought hard about it as she watched hi close the story book, a smile upon her face.

"if I lived in the North Pole, I would have a pet..." her voice trailed off as she thought about it. "Would a gingerbread man be considered a pet? Like the one in the other story we read sometimes?"

Her brother chuckled softly and shook his head. "No. I don't think so." he asked.

"Well then I think I'd have a penguin...or maybe a polar bear. Oh...maybe a reindeer!" She yawned, fighting to keep her eyes open as she contemplated her final answer.

"Lights out!" Their father called into them as her eyes fluttered closed and her brother slipped out of her room.

The sweet smell of fresh cookies tickled her nose, inviting her to open her eyes, but she wasn't sure if she was ready for that just yet. Something cold gently brushed  against her toes, but it was the loud bang, the sound of something falling to the hard wood floor of her bedroom, that made her open her eye. She sat straight up, frantically rubbing all of the sleep blurring her vision from her eyes. A big, white polar bear lay curled up on the rug next to her bed, her floor lamp laying on the ground near by.

The sensation of something standing up form her bed drew her attention to the foot of her bed, where a penguin peered over her foot board at her, as if expecting something good to come his way. There was a knock on her bedroom door seconds before it swung open and a gingerbread an, larger than any gingerbread she had ever seen, waddled his way in. He had two candy Dots  for eyes, chocolate chips for a mouth and a Tootsie roll for a nose. Red icing hung down around the top of his head, giving hi red hair and three Sour Patch Kids were placed down the center of his torso for buttons.

"Barry, what did I tell you?" he asked, his voice booming in a low, deep, rumbling voice yet almost void of emotion. Barry the polar bear just looked at the gingerbread man apologetically.  "I told you not to wake her up!" the gingerbread an scolded. Barry hung his head as he stood and lumbered out of the room, his tail between his legs in shame.

"And Penny! I thought I told you to go play in the freezer. Why did we have a custom freezer made for you complete with a pond and an ice slide if you're not even going to use it?" Penny the penguin waddled around the bed but, to the little girl's surprise, Penny made her way over to the little girl and laid her little penguin head on the little girl's lap before asking her way out of the door, following Barry's path.

"Pets!" uttered the gingerbread an as he turned around and made his way to the door. "I'm sorry, miss. I'll keep them reined in. If they don't start behaving, I'll send the out to sleep with the reindeer!" He closed the door and the little girl sat alone in her bed, unsure what to think.

"Time for school!" Her mother's voice called, swinging the bedroom door open. The little girl's eyes fluttered open. It had all been a dream.
