Today I was presented a question, "What would a perfect Autism world look like?" and I've been thinking about it all day. Piece sat down today and answered it with a number of imaginative details designed to produce the most enjoyable environment not just for him, but for others with Autism and I'm almost disappointed by my answer.
I could sit here and bore you with crazy details about a world filled with bubble wrap and "meltdown rooms" where everyone would be safe and protected from a lack of danger awareness and violent reactions to internal and external stimulus, but I don't feel like that is what would make a perfect world. In fact, all I can think of is an answer that sounds simple and easy but, in actuality is not even in the same universe as "simple" and "easy".
I love living in a world filled with diversity. I embrace the quirks and the very things that make us different from one another and I celebrate the reality that there are an infinite number of ways to think and solve problems. I wouldn't want to limit any of that. But I would want to enhance the amount of awareness we have about each other. I would love for acceptance to be the norm rather then something that we have to fight for and that so many others have to fight for. I would want a world where love was spread like air and accommodations were made for the differences and struggles of the many.
A perfect world would be one in which no one felt alone and parents don't question their ability to be amazing because they would know. I would want a world where blowing bubbles could help defuse meltdowns, anger, and disagreements and war was something made up but not a reality.
But most of all, I dream of a world where my children and all of the other children in the world would be seen for the amazingly awesome individuals they are with monumental greatness not so deep within them and all of these children know they are loved, not just by their parents and family, but by the world at large; a world that accepts everyone for who they are while supporting them and celebrating them as they do things we've only dreamed of.
That's what I think of when I imagine a perfect world for people with Autism. What is it you envision? Let us know in the comments.
